Cocooning in Cucamonga

Wikipedia says: "Cocooning is the name given to trend that sees individuals socializing less and retreating into their home more. The term was coined in the 1990s by Faith Popcorn a trend forecaster and marketing consultant. Popcorn identified cocooning as a commercially significant trend that would lead to, among other things, stay-at-home electronic shopping.
Since Popcorn coined the term, the trend has continued. The creation of the World Wide Web (WWW), home entertainment technology, advances in communication technology (cellphones, PDAs, and Blackberries) which allow 'work-at-home' options, and demographic changes have made cocooning an increasingly attractive option."

I say cocooning is retreating into your own space, avoiding others.

My favorite movie is Pride and Prejudice. And a quote by Lizzie sums up my feelings today: "There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it."

Perhaps it's good that I cocoon today. It's good for knitting anyway.

My home is certainly my retreat. There is nowhere I'd rather be. I've never understood folks who, after one or two days of bad weather, get cabin fever. It's always been get out a book, the knitting, a good movie, make soup, sleep...enjoy the luxury of not having to leave! I'm with you...stay home!

It's funny, I was talking to a co-worker who was complaining that communities are not the same anymore, I basically talked about the same thing. Explaining that the internet, with it's blogs, email, forums and the general www, helps people fill their social wants/needs. On the other hand my apartment is the size of a shoebox, so staying in for more than 48 hours is a definite no-no. Even with knitting, that would drive me nuts!

Well, I totally understand, Shrodinger, BUT you live in New York. Small apt might not be so bad in a place with so much to see, hear, and do close by!

MrsBear - I think, tho, that if you totally give in to this cocooning, it could develop into a problem...

Relationships are the most difficult part of life, but without them what is life?

Well, yes. Total surrender makes one a hermit. It just seems odd to me that people work so hard to get a home/apartment/whatever, then don't want to be there! Methinks I am a wee bit antisocial, however, and should not be taken too seriously!
